SYNOPSIS In Hairspray it's 1962 - the
'50s are out and change is in the air. Baltimore's Tracy Turnblad, a big girl with big hair and an even bigger heart, has
only one passion - to dance. She wins a spot on the local TV dance program, "The Corny Collins Show" and, overnight, is transformed
from outsider to irrepressible teen celebrity. But can a trendsetter in dance and fashion vanquish the program's reigning
princess, win the heart of heartthrob Link Larkin, and integrate a television show without denting her ‘do’? Only
in Hairspray! Welcome to the '60s!
Michael will be performing at 8 shows a week (barring unforeseen circumstances) and his contract runs for 6 months from
the first preview on 11 October. He will be taking leave between 22 December and 5 January.

WIN A SIGNED COPY OF "ONE VOICE"

COMMENTS FROM MICHAEL ABOUT "ONE VOICE"
One Voice (Barry Manilow, 1979) Barry Manilow’s such a great writer; he absolutely gets his
melodies and lyrics to move an audience and as such has inspired a lifelong devoted following. I completely agree with
this too – that music brings people together – and when I was thinking of a concept and title for this album,
this song sprang out at me. I loved the idea of tracking my voice and making a choir out of it – the song has
huge range which starts off a capella before the full orchestra sweeps in. It’s about metaphorical harmony, about
how we all need to live in harmony and that’s something else I totally believe in.
Hero (Mariah Carey 1993) After the July 7 bombs in London last year I was watching footage of all
the people who’d put their lives at risk, real people who got stuck straight in trying to help in any way they could;
a friend of mine was on the Kings Cross train, she took some footage on her mobile which was used on a news programme and
over it they played this beautiful song by Mariah Carey. Listening to the lyrics it just struck me as a life affirming,
powerful song – simple but meaningful.
The Living Years (Mike and the Mechanics 1988) This has always been a favourite song of mine –
it was written by BA Robertson and Mike Rutherford and sung by the fantastic Paul Carrack. It’s a song that everyone
can relate to – we’ve all been in conflict with our parents, we’ve all made mistakes, argued, slammed the
door and then regretted it afterwards. And although there will always be a generational gulf, once they’re gone
it’s too late to try and build bridges. It’s brilliantly written and expresses sadness as well as hope.
Where Do I Begin (Andy Williams 1970) This song is just beautiful from an equally beautiful film
that I love and makes me cry every time. It’s such a romantic song – just imagine someone singing it about
you.
Since You’ve Been Gone (Rainbow 1979) I always look for songs that make people say, ‘no
way has he covered that!’. This is outstanding, theatrical, bombastic rock; I loved the idea of doing it by keeping
the heavy rock element but bringing in a string section so that there’s a tongue-in-cheek opening with the string section
doing a sort of Bach opening before it goes into all-out rock mode. I want everyone to join in the chorus… and
I do like surprising people and hopefully getting away with it!
I Don’t Wanna Talk About It (Rod Stewart, 1975) Rod Stewart did this on his ‘Atlantic
Crossing’ album and then it was done by Everything But the Girl in 1988; it’s a classic pop song and I wanted
to make it small and intimate and heartfelt.
I Don’t’ Want To Miss A Thing (Aerosmith 1998) I love the old power ballads and the thought
of covering an Aerosmith song. This is very much my kind of song – written by Diane Warren it’s big, powerful
and shoots straight from the heart. Love it.
If You’re Not The One (Daniel Bedingfield 2002) I really think this is a classic of its generation
– it’s one of the best written pop songs I’ve ever heard, brilliantly crafted and arranged. I thought
Daniel Bedingfield’s original performance of it was wonderful and I couldn’t resist trying it with my voice.
His voice is very high and very different from mine – in recording it for this album I used my falsetto which I don’t
do very often.
Lyin’ Eyes (The Eagles 1975) I love the Eagles; I recorded ‘Desperado’ on my last
album (‘Music’). This was Tim Rice’s idea – I ran into him just after we’d both bought tickets
to the Eagles show at Twickenham and mentioned that I was thinking of doing another Eagles song – he said ‘you’ve
got to do Lyin’ Eyes, it’s a great story about heading for the cheatin’ side of town!’ so I did…
they played it at the gig, which was absolutely amazing, so here it is.
Everybody Hurts (REM 1992) This is the one I was most nervous about recording because how do you
do an REM song and do something different. We all hit times in our lives when we’re very low and we think we’re
the only ones feeling pain and we just can’t go on. Then we realise that everyone feels like that at some stage
and that we can help each other. I’ve known people I love who’ve been in that place and I’ve tried
to help them and to be honest, I’ve been there myself. I just wanted to do my version of it because it means so
much to me.
Home (Michael Buble 2005) I was in the US for so long last year and I was lonely – it’s
so well written for someone who does this job – we’re absolutely blessed, travelling, meeting people, seeing the
world – but there are times when you just want to be at home. When you’re away for a long time you get lonely,
you feel insecure, you don’t belong and you don’t feel rooted – you start to feel it’s all going on
at home and you can’t be part of it. But it makes the going home so much better! And I hate the telephone;
I’d rather see people in person and can’t bear emails – they’re useful but they have no emotion.
It’s the nuances in a conversation that are more important that the words themselves.

29 NOVEMBER 2005
ROC TO CEASE FUNDRAISING
The Trustees of one of Michael's charities, ROC, have decided to discontinue fundraising from the end of the year.
Their office will no longer be functioning after Christmas and they have asked that we pass this information on to you as
they will not require your donations in lieu of Christmas presents for Michael. Here is a message from John McGowan,
Chairman of ROC:
After fourteen years of hard work, total commitment and results that went beyond our wildest expectations,
on December 31st 2005, ROC will be closing down.
When we started all those years ago, medical research teams in desperate need of funding to find a way to beat
this 'silent killer', often abandoned their projects because their chances of attracting sufficient funding was almost zero.
Equally, it was quite a shock to discover how little the general public knew about the disease which devastates the lives
of so many women and their families.
ROC can proudly claim to have reversed a truly significant portion of those twin dilemmas, but only because
you all rallied and gave us one hundred per cent support in our work. Not knowing what to expect to help raise funds, we reached
out to hundreds of people across the country, people like you who had the same sense of commitment, people who had lost very
loved women to this dreadful disease - women like Angela McGowan and Pamela Cullen who were the inspiration for establishing
ROC - and wanted to make sense of such a terrible loss. Together we achieved something memorable.
Initially we raised money to ensure that the ovarian cancer screening unit at St. Bartholomew's Hospital in
London, on the point of closure when we came along, were able to stay open and subsequently with our support attracted an
unprecedented donation of £22 million from the Medical Research Council to allow them to continue their work. Currently we
have just completed a two year commitment to fund the vitally important research work of Dr. Ian Hampson at St.Mary's Hospital
in Manchester.
Equally importantly, in an intensive media campaign, talking to women's groups across the country and at endless
fundraising events so many of you organised, we raised public awareness of a then little discussed disease.
We now feel it is time to let others take the lead in the fight against ovarian cancer, proud to have been
at the forefront for so many years and proud to have been part of ROC.
Any donations received after the 31st December 2005 will continue to be forwarded to Dr. Ian Hampson's very
worthwhile project at St. Mary's Hospital in Manchester.
Our very grateful thanks to all of you and a special, most sincere thanks to our patron, Michael Ball, who
from day one gave one hundred per cent support to our work, and raised thousands of pounds on ROC's behalf.
We hope, like us, you will continue to support other groups in their work to defeat ovarian cancer and that
ROC will always be remembered as an innovative, independent and determined charity, who proved that with the right army behind
them, anyone can make a difference. And we are proud to say with your help, we did.
With warmest good wishes on behalf of everyone at ROC, and again our thanks.
John McGowan, Chairman
Michael continues to support The Royal Theatrical Fund.
